  • How to Network at a Seminar/Conference

share-itThere isn’t a better way to find like-minded people than at a seminar. These peers can help you learn about different topics that will better your understanding and therefore, your business. Making new connections is key to furthering your career. Knowing how to network at a seminar is crucial. Here are a few tips.

How to Prepare Prior to the Seminar:

    • Come ready. Make sure you bring updated business cards. Know your goals—what do you want to get most out of this seminar? Are you looking to find a new job? Do you want to bring in more business for your company? Or do you want to meet people who will deepen your understanding of your craft and keep you updated on trends?
    • Make a schedule. Once you know your goals, you can make your schedule. Which people do you need to meet or see present in order to achieve your seminar goals? Who do you want to talk with? Typically, your seminar will have a website that has the schedule and background on the presenters.

If you aren’t sure about what to expect, check our blog post for tips on attending seminars.

Things to do During the Seminar:

    • Collect business cards from people you want to stay in touch with. It’s better to network with people who will build your career rather than exchange your card with everyone you meet.
    • Listen and ask (meaningful, excellent) questions. Introduce yourself and pay close attention to what the other person is saying to find out if there is any common ground. Remember, building connections takes time and effort.
    • Join the conversation on Twitter. Chances are your seminar will have a hashtag. When a presenter says something worth sharing, retweet it. Check the hashtag to see what others are saying. Can you answer someone’s question? Then do so. You might meet people on Twitter that are worth having a bite to eat with while at the seminar.

Things to do After the Seminar:

    • Send follow-up emails; find your peers on Twitter. Make notes about people you met, and attach them to the business cards they’ve given you.
    • It’s possible that you didn’t get to connect with everyone you wanted to. Send a note to the presenter or panelist and let them know you appreciate their expertise. You can then request additional information if necessary.

It’s important to establish yourself and connect to the people you met or the presenters you listened to. Otherwise, you aren’t getting the most out of the seminar.

Here at Integrated Consulting Group, we specialize in the design, development, and customization of SAP Human Capital Management business software for leading edge North American companies with global reach. Have any questions about SAP? Feel free to contact us via the contact page of our site, or on Twitter or LinkedIn. We’d love to hear from you.

  • HR 2014 Preview

HR2014HR 2014, set for next week (March 11-14, 2014 at Swan and Dolphin, Orlando, Florida), is fast approaching, and it’s set to be very valuable and informative to those attending.

During HR 2013, SAP provided more details about integrating SAP and SuccessFactors along with what their intentions with SuccessFactors were for the road ahead. Customers and colleagues left understanding that a significant shift was taking place, and many left wondering exactly how it would fit within their existing IT structure.

SuccessFactors has garnered many more sessions at HR 2014, and those sessions are likely to be well-attended, thanks largely to the appetite of people still seeking a better understanding of what the SAP and SuccessFactors marriage means. Several customers I work with have expressed that they’ll move to a hybrid model with Core HR staying within SAP ECC, and would like more assurances from SAP that Core HR will continue to have new and improved functionality.

The Keynote Address, “Harnessing HCM technology in a rapidly changing world to drive strategic business outcomes,” by Shawn Price, President, SAP Global Cloud & Line of Business, SAP and David Ludlow, Group Vice President, SAP HCM Solutions, SAP, should shed some light on questions customers have and surely create new ones. I look forward to this keynote and the following conversations it will undoubtedly create.

Core HR will be represented well at HR2014 and will cover SAP and SuccessFactors components. Many of the Core HR areas remain untouched or have limited impact from SuccessFactors. The education sessions are valuable to companies because they will provide more depth of knowledge, as well as information on how to streamline processes, and newly available functionality:

    • Payroll
    • OM and PA
    • Benefits
    • Time management
    • Employee Central
    • Travel management

The conference provides great networking opportunities through luncheon roundtables, the evening reception, and Ask-the-Experts. Ask-the-Experts is a perfect way not only to meet experts to get answers to questions you have now, but also to familiarize yourself with someone you will be able to bounce ideas off in the future.

Don’t forget, you can interact and follow all the action on Twitter with hashtag #HR2014. The following experts are always active on Twitter, but will be especially active during the conference:

Steve Bogner, Martin Gillet, Venki Krishnamoorthy, Danielle Larocca, Luke Marson, Jeremy Masters, Jarret Pazahanick, Brigid Sternberg, Mike Timm, Brandon Toombs, and AJ Whalen.

This year, as with many previous years, I’ll be speaking. You can find more information about my involvement with the conference here, but I’ve also provided brief summaries to get a better idea of the speaking engagements at HR 2014:

SAPInsider does a wonderful job organizing these conferences and making sure they always include high-quality content. A big thank you goes out to Allison Martin for what will undoubtedly be a wonderful and informative conference.

Be sure to take a look at our social media next week, when we’ll have photos and other information from HR 2014. And in the mean time, if you have any questions about ICG or about me Mike Timm, let us know on Twitter, Facebook, or LinkedIn.
